While new quilts are all good and well, it is usually good to pay homage to the past and remember the traditional way quilts were made. One of the keystones of original quilting is the patchwork quilt.

This was an an incredibly well liked quilt amongst the working class, especially when money was tight. It was in the years of the great depression, that this quilt experienced an explosion in appreciation. With so many out of work, it was a good way of saving cash and keeping warm at night.

Material

The ideal material for these quilts are scraps “of course , that’s what makes up a patchwork quilt. It doesn’t have to be particularly quantities either. Pattern

There is no obligation for patterns. The most generally utilised pattern was an easy square pattern. This was employed more usually just because its such a simple pattern to sew.

It's not odd to see hexagonal patterns either. It just needs a little more thinking to plan out the pattern, to make sure that similar colours are not placed too close together.

Don’t be frightened to get creative with your patterns, the colours do not need to complement perfectly. In fact , its probably better if they do not, that is the charm of a patchwork quilt.
